Jewelry Supplies Needed for Crafting your Own Lampwork Beads

The term lampwork beads describes a particular type of hand worked glass bead that is commonly used in Jewelry Making.  Historically, the beads were made by melting glass over oil-fueled lamps as early as the 1st century B.C. in Syria.  The popularity of the beads grew over the centuries and Murano, Italy became the major producer during the 14th century.  The secrets behind making the beads were assiduously protected as were the jewelry supplies needed for the process.

Today, bead makers use butane, propane, or natural gas torches that are easily available in a variety of stores.  Glass rods used in the construction of the beads have also been standardized and are available for purchase in a rainbow of colors.  Here is a list of the basic tools you would need to begin working with lampwork beads – you can find all of these supplies online.

Glass

Clearly, if you are going to make glass beads, you will need glass.  Not every type of glass is suitable for lampwork.  Borosilicate glass, commonly known as “hard glass and soda-lime glass,” aka “soft” glass, are used in tandem to create the works of art common to this style of jewelry making.  Most important when combining the different types of glass is that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CEO) is compatible, or fracture and breakage, sometimes violent, will occur as pieces cool.

Torch

Selecting a torch is, to some degree, a personal matter.  From beginner models to complex ones capable of burning different types of gasses, you can find quite a variety of models online.  Beginners may do best purchasing a kit which comes with nearly all the pieces they need, while more advanced crafters should look at something more specialized.  Of course, it is best to try out a specific model before you spend your money if possible.  Versatility and affordability are your key determining factors.

Common Tools

While you must start your collection of tools with a torch and some glass, there are many other things you will need in order to create lampwork beads. 

Marvers – are flat surfaces upon which you can roll your heated glass in order to shape it.  Some marvers may be rod shaped and come in different sizes for additional manipulation.
   
Molds – made from a variety of materials, these shape hot glass in to a specific shape, for example a round bead or an oval one.

Picks – typically made of tungsten, these are used to move glass around on a surface to pierce the bead and make a hole.

Jacks – are used to cut off the shaped glass from the larger rod.

There are other necessary tools such as heat proof work surfaces, mandrels upon which to form beads, and rod rests.  Considering the potential danger of working with torches and hot glass, classes in lampwork beadmaking are advisable.

Finding the Right Tools for the Right Price

As is always the case when starting a new hobby, costs can be as high as you want to make them.  If, after you have taken a class in glasswork you are certain you want to try your hand at the craft at home, then look for a website which offers a range of prices and a reasonable selection.  Don’t necessarily invest in top of the line equipment unless it is your goal to make a profession out of your new interest.

Finding a reliable, well stocked site is a boon.  Knowing that you can obtain the jewelry supplies you want in a reasonable amount of time will allow you to plan out your projects in advance.  Lampwork beads are beautiful, colorful, and just plain fun.  With all the different styles of beads you can make, you can enjoy your new craft for many years to come.
